In our family, the saying is true: you can pick your friends but you can't pick your relatives. Our grandfather was certainly no exception. Year after year, on his farm in Bloomfield, NY, he would sponsor challenges and, every year, he would name Dave, our oldest brother, the winner. It didn't matter if it was pumpkin growing, fence painting or a hay baling contest. Dave was the clear favorite. Turns out that Dave was buying off the judge with his homemade honey wine.
To this day, Dave continues to believe that he's better than the rest of the family - especially at entertaining friends and making wine.
But the rest of us? We're not buying that story. Sure, he may be really friendly, but until you've met all three of us, tried our wines and had some fun, we say the jury's out.
