November 23rd, 1944, in the dark skies over Belgium came a rumble like an invisible roman candle. An American B-17 was coming in hot with her landing gear down. After barely clearing a nest of anti-aircraft guns, the Goliath slide into the earth. A wing broke, the propeller smashed, shrapnel rained down on the stunned soldiers nearby. As the plane came to a halt, everyone stood in anticipation of some sign of life. Finally Major John Crisp crept toward the still humming behemoth. He entered the plane alone, ready for anything. Well almost anything. Major Crisp found none of the crew on board the plane but he did find their 12 parachutes neatly in their place and a few half eaten chocolate bars. No distress call had come from the crew. The plane appeared to have somehow, with only two working engines, flown itself home and landed. How a massive B-17 came to land with all the doors closed and latched and the parachutes stowed in their place was never fully explained.
