Tenacious Three: Exploring the business of social with Three Brothers Wineries & Estates

September 20, 2022   |   Written by Maiah Johnson Dunn

"He [Founder Dave Mansfield] says the premise was simple: “something for everyone. That’s what we used as the catalyst to our brand.” Within a year, the land was transformed into Three Brothers Wineries and Estates. Featuring three distinct wineries (Stony Lonesome, Bagg Dare, and Passion Feet), this multi-building and brand experience was the first of its kind at the time. Warhorse Brewing followed in 2009 and the later addition of Iron Heart Cafe solidified the property as a destination less than 15-minutes outside downtown Geneva."

Three Brothers Wineries 2022 Rochester Top Workplace
    May 26th, 2022

Geneva, New York May 28, 2022 - Three Brothers Wineries and Estates has been awarded a Top Workplaces 2022 honor by The Rochester Top Workplaces. The list is based solely on employee feedback gathered through a third-party survey administered by employee engagement technology partner Energage, LLC. The anonymous survey uniquely measures 15 culture drivers that are critical to the success of any organization: including alignment, execution, and connection, just to name a few.

"Companies need to authentically represent their brand to job-seekers," said Eric Rubino, Energage CEO. "The employee experience needs to be on the mission-critical list. Leaders who embrace a people-first culture will benefit greatly. By giving employees a voice and showcasing your authentic culture through employer branding, organizations can attract those job seekers who complement their culture. Culture drives performance."

"We decided to participate in the top places to work survey in earnest. We try really hard to be a great place to work, but we wanted to give our team a chance to speak their truth and put our effort to the test. I can't say I'm surprised about the designation, but I am pleased. We spend a large portion of our lives at our places of work, our mission is to develop an internal atmosphere that values creativity, transparency, and teamwork. We're proud of what we've built in the Finger Lakes, without the dedication of a hardworking team we wouldn't be able to continue to operate at this high level, our employees deserve a place to work where they feel valued."  - Erica Paolicelli, TBW President

Cabernet Franc Rose 91 Points in Wine & Spirits Magazine
    May 14th, 2022

    Shop Online Now!

Big congratulations to our production team! Wine & Spirits Magazine recently awarded 91 points to our 2021 Cabernet Franc Rosé. Sample it in Stony Lonesome (our traditional winery on the Three Brothers Wineries campus), look for it in regional wine shops or order online.

Finger Lakes Rosé is super hot right now which is ironic because it's always served chilled. Made with 100% Finger Lakes Cabernet Franc grapes this dry rose is refreshing, fruity and pairs well with a variety of foods but is also delicious on it's own.

Winemaker's Tasting Notes: Aromas of fresh strawberry, honeydew melon, and white peaches lead to a palate of juicy grapefruit and strawberry lemonade supported by a crisp acidic backbone.

    Passion Feet Tasting Room Renovation
    April 29th, 2022

Progress! Our vision is coming to life in our Passion tasting room. We’re grateful for all of the help pulling this all together… especially to our handyman, Aaron who has done the lion share of the work. A couple more lights to install and then the booth system is next on the to-do list, look for that installation in a couple of months.

    Vineyard Sustainablity
    April 22nd, 2022

Happy Earth Day! Before anything else we are a farm first. We do several things focused on sustainability in our vineyard, here are a few...
    • Plant under row cover crops where applicable to reduce run off, erosion, and leachate. Planting buckwheat in blocks where vigor can be maintained and blue chicory in vineyards where vigor needs to be reduced. Cover crops reduce erosion and they reduce the amount of leachate that exits a vineyard in runoff and provide habitat for beneficial predatory insects.
    • Further limiting erosion by using subsurface drainage and catch basins to control run off
    • Hang several bird houses around the farm.
    • Plant a wildflower blend on the front acre by Lerch road. We will mow them down after bloom as a green compost, then plant a cover crop or ground cover blend. Doing this every year provides a pollinator habitat and reduces our fuel consumption from mowing.
    • In an effort to reduce fuel consumption we only mow specific blocks for aesthetic purposes. Everything else is mowed only when laborers need to go in, or when the centers reach the height of the fruit wires. This not only reduces fuel consumption but provides a better mulching effect than mowing short grass.
Shout out to our vineyard manager Nate Crawford (pictured here) who spearheads our vineyard sustainability efforts.

Bravey Wine Collaboration with Alexi Pappas
    April 1st, 2022

Three Brothers Wineries & Estates (TBW) is excited to release Bravey Rosé, a collaboration with Olympic runner and award-winning actor and writer Alexi Pappas. In 2021 Pappas published "Bravey," a memoir sharing her life experiences about “how we can all overcome hardship, befriend pain, celebrate victory, relish the loyalty found in teammates, and claim joy. In short: how every one of us can become a bravey.”

A mutual friend connected Pappas and TBW President Erica Paolicelli in 2021, that’s when the idea for a collaboration was born. Our "Women of Distinction'' wine series designs wines that honor female voices, and Alexi was a perfect fit. “I was so thrilled and honored when they invited me to be a part of it, '' said Pappas. “In discussing the characteristics of a Bravey wine, we decided that it would be something poppy, refreshing, bright, and dry. The result is a rosé that I hope you'll enjoy under the sun this spring!”

“The spotlight that Alexi’s influence shines on Finger Lakes dry rosé and Three Brothers is really exciting for us” says Paolicelli, “we’re thrilled to have the opportunity to see what a collaboration like this can do for our business.”

The labels in Passion Feet (one of the three wineries on the TBW estate) are inspired by women that have made a significant impact throughout history. We admire the bold characteristics of women past and present like Rosa Parks' ferocity for equality, Annie Oakley's eccentricity and Susan B. Anthony's tenacity. We believe in the power of surrounding yourself with people who inspire you. The people who bring out the absolute best in you. The kind of people who push you to level up in everything you do.

Produced and bottled in the heart of the Finger Lakes, Bravey wine is a refreshing dry rosé made with a blend of Barbera, Zweigelt, Cabernet Franc, and Pinot Noir grapes. It is available for purchase in the TBW tasting room, online store and select wine shops in New York State.

    Bagg Dare Winery Fire
    December 7th, 2021

We had a fire on December 6th, 2021 at Three Brothers Wineries and Estates in our beloved Bagg Dare Wine Company. Thankfully, no one was hurt and no one was in the building at the time. We are heartbroken at the destruction of the famed structure, its history and the authentic memorabilia inside, but we are grateful to the local fire department and all others who arrived so quickly to help.

Three Brothers Wineries & Estates named to 2021 Greater Rochester Chamber Top 100 List of Fastest-Growing, Privately Owned Companies
    November 4, 2021

Three Brothers Wineries & Estates is proud to have earned a spot on the 2021 Top 100 list of fastest-growing, privately owned companies in the Rochester and Finger Lakes region (#98).
Co-Owner and President Erica Paolicelli says “We're thrilled to discover that we made the list of fastest-growing companies.  2020 was a demanding year presenting many tough decisions that led to substantial changes in the way we conduct business. With the uncertainty surrounding small businesses today, we're proud of this accomplishment.  This accolade speaks volumes about our team; without their unwavering support, creativity, willingness to help in any way needed, we wouldn't have survived let alone shown growth during the pandemic.  We're grateful to have made this esteemed list in the past, but this time feels extra special.”

To be eligible for the Greater Rochester Chamber Top 100 program, companies must be privately owned, headquartered in the nine-county Rochester region, and have earned at least $1 million in revenue in each of the three most recent fiscal years. Greater Rochester Chamber President and CEO Bob Duffy said, “The Greater Rochester Chamber Top 100 program serves as the perfect illustration that Rochester has indeed moved from a company town of a few major employers to a place made up of industry from every sector. This year we are excited to see a strong cross-section of well-established companies and startups competing for a coveted spot on the list. The 2021 Greater Rochester Chamber Top 100 companies employ close to 67,000 people and reported total revenue of over $14 billion in the most recent fiscal year. The economic impact generated by these businesses has real and lasting influence on our community, and we are proud to have them in our region.
